A Golf Fitness Program

Golf is one of the largest growing sports in the world, and it is one of the most popular participation sports for men and women of all ages. Golf is the top mode of physical activity for individuals over 50-years-old. Along with the increasing popularity of the sport, comes the increase in injuries related to golf. Over half of all golfers will sustain at least one injury directly related to their golf participation.

Improved physical fitness can enhance one's golf game and prevent or even treat golf related injuries. That is why COAST Physical Therapy, PC has developed their Golf Fitness Program, "Fit Fore the Fairway." The aim of this program is to establish an individualized fitness program to address flexibility concerns and muscle imbalance issues to improve one's overall golf performance.

Golfers are athletes. The golf swing is a rapid athletic movement that combines flexibility, strength, balance and coordination, swing mechanics, and endurance. Too many golfers focus on the equipment held in their hands and not enough on what is swinging the club. An emphasis needs to be placed on the body as the most important piece of equipment that can be improved upon.

The game of golf places very specific demands on the body in attempt to swing the golf club with consistency, accuracy and speed. The five pillars of golf fitness are flexibility, strength, endurance (both cardiovascular and muscular), balance, and motor control. What makes this so complicated is that these five pillars of fitness involve your whole body, from your neck all the way down to your ankle and foot, and everything in between. By making an attempt to improve in one or all of these areas, injuries can be prevented and golf performance improved, and thus more enjoyment of the game.

By taking an interest in your golf related fitness and participating in COAST Physical Therapy's "Fit Fore the Fairway" Program, the following goals can be expected:

  1. The ability to produce more powerful, consistent, and coordinated golf swings.
  2. Improve driving distance by increasing swing range of motion and therefore club head speed.
  3. The ability to walk 18 holes without feeling fatigued or losing focus.
  4. Less recovery time required, allowing you to play more rounds of golf
  5. Better overall enjoyment of the game!

Golf rehabilitation, including golf fitness, is a specialty area of physical therapy. Physical therapists who are specifically trained in proper biomechanics, swing mechanics, and common swing faults that can lead to injury can facilitate the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of golf related injuries.
